Earth Day tree AND shrub planting event in Kane County April 18
GENEVA IL - The Forest Preserve District of Kane County is calling for volunteers to help plant five-hundred trees and shrubs in honor of Earth Day. The event takes place on April 18 at 10:00 am, at Fabyan Forest Preserve, 1925 Batavia Avenue.
Volunteers will place trees and shrubs in pre-dug holes, back fill and tamp down soil, then add water and mulch. The activity is designed to be easy for volunteers of all experience levels. The event goes until noon or once all the trees and shrubs are planted.
“This year marks the 56th anniversary of Earth Day,” said Robb Cleave of the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, “and our 25th anniversary of celebrating by planting trees."
The event will also feature giveaways, a nautralist-guided hike, an environmental education pop-up exhibit, a traveling science center and music by folk singer songwriter Mark Dvorak.
“Mark has been on the road for a lot of years,” said Cleave. “Like fine wine, he keeps getting better with age. We're thrilled that he was able to join us for the event. His music will add a lot to the atmosphere."
Dvorak who accompanies himself on guitar, 5-string banjo and 12-string guitar is celebrating the release of his 20th CD, Live & Alone, recorded in an empty concert hall during the height of the pandemic lock down, and his fourth book of essays, 31 Winters, which reflects on his long journey through music and teaching.
The Chicago Tribune has called Dvorak “masterful,” and the Fox Valley Folk Festival describes him as “a living archive of song and style.” Dvorak has won awards for journalism and children’s music, and was honored in 2013 with the FARM Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International. In 2008 he received the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2012 Rich Warren, long time host of The Midnight Special radio program named Dvorak “Chicago’s official troubadour.”
