Friday’s schedule of events runs from 4:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon until 10:00 pm.

“Some of Chicagoland’s most iconic hot dog stands will go head-to-head to claim the title of 'Best Frankfurter,’ ” says the Windy City Hot Dog Fest web site.

“I’ve had my share of hot dogs over the years,” said Chicago’s official troubadour Dvorak. “I had a Nathan’s in New Jersey one time, and that was really good. I had mine with mustard and several of the other diners waiting in line frowned upon me.”

"in Copenhagen you can find a sausage stand on just about every city block. I had a red sausage on a roll called a rød pølse, and a cumberland sausage on a bun a few blocks down. Then a liverwurst and a brat, which was much more spicy than the brats here in the states.”

“I’ve had hot dogs in thirteen different major league ball parks including Wrigley Field and whatever they’re calling the ball park where the White Sox now play. Nuh, uh,” he said. “Nope."

“The best hot dog at a ball game is right out west of here in Rosemont,” he continued. “Take in a Chicago Dogs ball game and you’ll enjoy the classic Chicago-style dog on a steamed bun with all the trimmings. It’s even better if you attend on dollar-beer night. I love this game."

"One time headed home late with a friend,” he continued, "we decided to work our way home by not passing up an open hot dog stand. We started at Gold Coast Dogs on the near north side. We then encountered a place still open on Maxell Street. Heading west we stopped in at Pete’s on Cermak and Ridgeland for our final dog of the night."

“Yes,” he said, “you have to travel a lot of miles to acquire an accurate assessment of the hot dog landscape. The times they are a changin'.”

City News Cafe is sponsoring Dvorak’s appearance on the Community Stage, Friday May 30 at 6:00 pm. You’ll find him waiting in line before and after the show.
