Lake County Folk Club celebrates 25 years with concert & acoustic jam
GURNEE IL - The Lake County Folk Club welcomes folk singer songwriter Mark Dvorak for a special 25th Anniversary concert and acoustic jam on Sunday, October 16 at 7:00 pm. The event will take place at Primo Italian-American Cuisine, 720 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Gurnee.

Twenty-five years ago the Lake County Folk Club held its inaugural event, an open stage in the basement of the old Last Chance Saloon in Grayslake. Since then the club has hosted acoustic community concerts, jam sessions, open stages, songwriter circles and an off-and-on festival in venues all across Lake County.
“There’s been at least seven,” said Lake County Folk Club president Scott Engstrom of the number of venues that have served as home base for the club. “Most organizations present their events in church basements and coffee houses, and such. We wanted our club activities to happen in a place where folks could come for dinner and enjoy a beverage along with the music.”
Engstrom who is in his third year as president, also hosts the monthly open stage. He succeeded club co-founder Chuck VanderVennett who held that position for more than fifteen years.
“We wanted our 25th Anniversary to be something special,” said VanderVennett. “and Mark was our first choice. He is a charter member of the club and an artist who truly integrates all aspects associated in the broad spectrum that is folk music."
The evening will have two segments. Dvorak will open the evening with a one hour concert set, and then lead the audience and club musicians in a sing along and acoustic jam to close the evening.
Mark Dvorak who was named Chicago’s “official troubadour” by WFMT 98.7 fm Fine Arts Radio, has forged a thirty-year career as a touring musician, songwriter, educator and community builder. He has recorded seventeen albums to date including 2011’s acclaimed Time Ain’t Got Nothin’ On Me and 2015’s independent release, Back Home.
He has won awards for children’s music, journalism and was honored in 2008 with the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2013 he received the FARM Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International.
“He’s the real deal,” said Bau Graves, Executive Director of Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. ”Mark has made music his life and livelihood. He’s been a top faculty member at the school for more than twenty-five years. His performances are elegant, rich and powerful.”
General admission to the 25th Anniversary concert and jam session is $15, $12 for seniors and $10 for club members. Information and reservations can be made by calling 847 602 8882.
