Old friends reunion concert at Center for Spiritual Living July 27
ST. LOUIS MO - The Center for Spiritual Living, 12875 Fee Fee Road will present a special acoustic reunion concert, “Together,” on Saturday, July 27 at 7:00 pm. The evening features the music of old friends Tim Lilly from Rock Hill and Chicago singer songwriter Mark Dvorak.
The two met in 1977 while working in the shipping department of Musser, Incorporated, a division of Ludwig Drums which produced xylophones, marimbas and other percussion instruments.
“From early on,” said Dvorak, “Tim was into a lot of different sounds. He could already play guitar, and I was just beginning. He was an important mentor and friend as we each scrambled to find our way.”
Lilly who plays acoustic and electric guitar wound up studying piano, keyboard and ultimately the pedal harp. Dvorak found his way to the Old Town School of Folk Music where he took classes and eventually landed a position on faculty where he taught for thirty-one years.
“I am grateful that Tim and I have kept in touch,” said Dvorak. “I spent a lot of time at his house while we were young men, listening to music and adventuring out into the world. At some point it was evident that we were headed in different directions both personally and musically, but those early bonds have prevailed. I’m excited to be part of this concert. It’s the first time ever that we’ve shared the stage. ”
The Center for Spiritual Living has been an anchor in the St. Louis community for fifty-five years. It is a community that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds, faiths, and spiritual paths.
Dvorak is celebrating the launch of his 20th recorded release, Live & Alone, recorded during the great pandemic in an empty concert hall and the publication of 31 Winters: Finding the Folk Way, a collection of essays and stories reflecting on his long journey through teaching and music.
“At this stage of the game,” said the Dvorak from his home outside Chicago, Illinois, “I feel like I’m doing my best work.”
The Chicago Tribune has called Dvorak “masterful,” and the Fox Valley Folk Festival describes him as “a living archive of song and style.” Dvorak has won awards for journalism and children’s music, and was honored in 2013 with the FARM Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International.
In 2008 he received the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2012 Rich Warren, long time host of The Midnight Special radio program named Dvorak “Chicago’s official troubadour.”
