The American Folk Song

Vernon Area Public Library presents The American Folk Song with Mark Dvorak June 24

LINCOLNSHIRE IL - The Vernon Area Library, 300 Olde Half Day Road, will present a special free outdoor concert “The American Folk Song” with singer songwriter, storyteller and banjo player Mark Dvorak on Thursday, June 24 at 1:00 pm CDT.

The program is Dvorak’s exploration into the roots of American song. He will perform folk classics like “This Land is Your Land, “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” and “Oh Susannah.” He’ll mix in standards from the Great American Songbook like “Someone To Watch Over Me” and “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie.” Dvorak will also include stories about growing up in the Chicago area, songs he remembers from his grandparents and songs he learned while a student at the Old Town School of Folk Music.

Dvorak is busy at work on his 19th CD, Live & Alone, recorded for a live WFMT broadcast in an empty concert hall. He is also planning to release a new collection of essays, 31 Winters, also due out later this year.

He has performed in thirty-eight states and in parts of Europe and Canada. He has won awards for journalism and children’s music. In 2013 he received the FARM Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International and in 2008 he received the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012 The Midnight Special  radio program host Rich Warren named him “Chicago’s official troubadour.”

The outdoor concert is free and safe, social distance guidelines will be in place. The rain date is Monday, June 28 at 1:00 pm CDT.
