Music & Potlucks a 501 (c)(3) non-profit community organization will present a special live stream event “A Folk Club Reunion” on Wednesday, January 26 at 7:00 pm central time.
For more than 15 years, Folk Club @The Grafton met on the first and third Tuesdays each month in the cozy back room of the Irish Pub next door to the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. Beginning in January 2004, the all-inclusive, improvised acoustic session and sing-along quickly grew into a Chicago tradition.
“Folk Club grew organically over time,” said Mark Dvorak of the Old Town School of Folk Music and Music & Potlucks’ resident artist. “As my teaching began to mature I was fortunate enough to meet Frank Hamilton, cofounder of the Old Town School. Frank and I hit it off and we began a long conversation about teaching and learning and the importance of the folk experience.”
Hamilton is the celebrated cofounder of Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music, a singer songwriter, activist and educator.
Dvorak offered an Old Town School class based upon at Hamilton’s suggestion and bsed on his teaching method. The class ran for seventeen years and evolved into a late night acoustic jam session and sing along in the back room of the Irish pub next door to the school. “Folk Club @The Grafton” was born January 4, 2004 and hosted hundreds of singers, pickers, students and Old Town School faculty members in a one-of-a-kind acoustic session that met until the pandemic of 2020.
Admission to “A Folk Club Reunion” is free but attendees must register to receive the ZOOM link. Visit www.musicandpotlucks.org for more information and to register. For information on Mark Dvorak visit www.markdvorak.com.
