Live stream 5-string banjo concert supports Frank Hamilton School April 27
RIVER FOREST IL - Music & Potlucks, a 501(c)(3) community organization will present "The 2nd Annual 5-String Banjo Cacophony" on Wednesday, April 27 at 7:00 pm CDT. The live stream event will support the Frank Hamilton School of Music located in Decatur GA
The concert will feature folk legend Frank Hamilton performing with members of the Hamilton School music community as well as banjo players Sally Potter from East Lansing, Michigan, Manuel Adduci, originally from Buenos Aries, Argentina, multi-instrumentalist and educator Jason McInnes from Las Cruces, New Mexico, and composer and five-string master Max Allard who will be streaming from Boston, Massachusetts. Chicago’s Mark Dvorak will emcee the program.
The Hamilton School of Music is now in its sixth year offering classes, concerts, jam sessions and other gatherings.
“Music is a birthright,” said Hamilton from his home in Decatur. “It’s an ability like speech, that everyone shares to some degree. Anyone can learn at any time of life whether they consider themselves talented or not.”
Along with Win Stracke, Gertrude Solkert & Dawn Greening, Hamilton co-founded Chicago’s venerable Old Town School of Folk Music in December 1957 when he was just twenty-three years old. His sixty-year career in music is impressive. Hamilton has performed in almost every state in the U.S., from the Gate of Horn in Chicago, the first folk music nightclub in America, to touring up and down the east coast with The Weavers.
Among other things Hamilton is a gifted jazz guitarist, an uncredited scholar and dazzling instrumentalist. He is a daring improviser and a spirited entertainer. Above all else Frank Hamilton is a teacher.
“Frank is a true American master,” said Mark Dvorak, who has performed and taught with Hamilton, and will curate the live stream presentation. “You’d never hear him talk about himself that way. But if you took the time to ask those who know, that's what you’d find out. His legacy in music is the stuff out of which legends are made.”
"Bringing community musicians together for the purpose of supporting our neighbors in need is at the core of our mission,” said Stephanie Schrodt, co-director of Music & Potlucks. "We come from different parts of the Midwest and different parts of the country but we stay connected through music and the spoken word arts.”
Tickets to the live stream event are priced on a sliding scale from $10 - $25. Proceeds will directly support the Frank Hamilton School in Decatur, Georgia. Visit www.musicandpotlucks.org to reserve and register to receive the ZOOM link.
