Second Sunday Dances Series

CANCELLED • MD performs in the UP Sunday, January 12

CRYSTAL FALLS MI - The Second Sunday Folk Dance series celebrates its 35th season of music and dance. One of the Midwest’s most popular venues, the Second Sunday series is the largest, longest running event of its kind, presenting folk and acoustic musicians and singer songwriters in the main hall at Fortune Lake Lutheran Camp, just west of Crystal Falls.

“The ninety year-old camp was founded during the Great Depression,” said Bette Premo, who is music director of the series and performs with her husband Dean as Whitewater.

“The series runs from October through April each year and takes place in the dining hall at Fortune Lake Camp. It’s a very intimate setting and a lovely space to listen to music,” she said. "Then we push back the chairs and clear the floor for a session of folk dances.”

“Chicago’s official troubadour” Mark Dvorak returns as the featured guest artist for the January 12 event.

The singer songwriter has performed in thirty-eight states and parts of Europe. He has won awards for journalism and children’s music and received the 2013 FARM Lantern Bearer Award from Folk Alliance International. In 2008 he was honored with the Woodstock Folk Festival Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2012 WFMT 98.7 fm Midnight Special host Rich Warren named him “Chicago’s official troubadour.”

“Mark is a modern-day troubadour who has never stopped performing, writing and recording,” said Premo. “We’ve worked with him many times over the years and are thrilled to host him again in the UP."

Dvorak will be performing songs from his upcoming release Let Love Go On, as well as a selection of traditional folk, blues and pop standards from the Great American Songbook at the concert.

“When I started out,” said the singer, “I knew I was in it for the long haul.Thirty-five years later I’m still out on the road, still writing, still recording and still learning. At this stage of the game I feel like I’m doing my best work.”
