Singer-songwriter preserves folk legacy

RIVERSIDE, IL - A live concert broadcast by radio station WFMT will give listeners a taste of what will be in store at the two-day Fox Valley Folk Music & Storytelling Festival happening Labor Day weekend in Geneva. Among the artists performing in WFMT's "Folkstage" concert at 7 pm, Saturday, Sept. 1, in Geneva will be Mark Dvorak of Riversdie, an acclaimed composer, performer and teacher at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, whose been a working artist since 1981. His main stage festival performance starts at 1:00 pm on Monday. A vocalist who plays guitar and five-string banjo, Dvorak looks back on his musical journey of discovery.

SKOKIE, IL - Skokie. That's right Skokie, Illinois. Skokie is the Native American word for 'fire,' and is the world's largest village. Skokie is the home to the map people, Rand McNally. 

Skokie also has an excellent public library, the Skokie Public Library and they will be hosting "The Life and Songs of Woody Guthre" on Sunday, September 16 at 2:00 pm.

The program will feature the Old Town School of Folk Music's Mark Dvorak interpreting a number of Woody Guthrie's classic songs in honor of Guthrie's centennial year. Dvorak will by accompanied by Evanston Symphony violinist/violist

Old Town School fall session begins Sept. 4

Classes resume at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music after the annual 2 week summer break, on Tuesday September 4. Class listings, concert information and a whole lot more are easily available on the newly updated www.oldtownschool.org.

MD will be teaching four adult classes this session, as well as leading the Thursday Folk Jam in the new East Building at 4545 N. Lincoln Avenue.

Schuba's Acoustic Brunch, Sunday, 8/19

CHICAGO IL - Schuba's, 3169 N. Southport Avenue, welcomes Midwest Troubadour and song writer Mark Dvorak to the Acoustic Brunch series, on Sunday, August 19, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.

Dvorak's most recent release, Time Ain't Got Nothin' On Me'  has been widely acclaimed and received airplay throughout the United States and Canada. He is currently winding down a summer tour which began on July 4.

"I'm really looking forward to the Acoustic Brunch," he said. "I'm ready for a relaxed, casual show. I've always loved Schuba's, and the Harmony Grill is one of my favorite places to eat on the north side."
