Old Town School of Folk Music class celebrates Woody Guthrie

The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago has added an 8 week class, Bound for Glory : The Woody Guthrie Ensemble, to its Session 3 class listing.  Beginning Tuesday, May 1 at 6:30 pm, the class will become acquainted with America's great folk balladeer through his songs and his story. 

We'll learn the words, study the great melodies and dig into selections from WG's vast catalogue of essays and prose.

The session will culminate with an on - stage performance at the Woody Guthrie Centennial Celebration Concert on June 30 at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago, IL.

Heather Styka & MD co-bill at Maple Street

Maple Street concert director Paul Zimmerman announced that a special Sunday evening concert featuring MD and rising star Heather Styka has been added to the 2013 season.

"We're very excited about this concert," Zimmerman said. "Heather is gaining a lot of attention for her songwriting and performances, and we couldn't pass up the chance to pair her up with Mark."

The date for the concert is set for Sunday, February 17 at 7:30 pm. The Maple Street Chapel is located at Main Street and Maple Street, downtown Lombard IL. More information on the Chapel and the Folk Concert Series is at

Homeplace Pickin' Party receives top award

The Kentucky Travel Industry Association has given The Judge's Recognition Award to The Homeplace Pickin' Party Old-Time Music Festival as part of the 2012 Top 10 Festivals and Events. MD has appeared at the Homeplace Pickin' Party every year since 1999. 

This year's event is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend Saturday & Sunday, May 26 & 27 and will feature The Cumberland River Plowboys, Common Thread, MD, Gracie Wallace and many other acts.

The Homeplace is a 1840s working farm in Pryor Hollow, Land Between the Lakes, TN.

All across the country folks are celebrating the Woody Guthrie centennial year. Guthrie, born July 14, 1912, wrote over a thousand songs in his lifetime. "And those," Will Geer once said, "would be counting only the ones he took the time to write down."

Guitar pickers will enjoy working out MD's drop D tuning arragement of Guthrie's classic Pretty Boy Floyd.

Conversation Concerts to feature Midwest troubadour Mark Dvorak

ROCKFORD IL - Snapshot Music welcomes Midwest Troubadour Mark Dvorak for a Concert Conversation on Tuesday, April 24 at 6:00 pm. The concert will take place at Emerson House, 420 North Main Street, Rockford.

8th annual Spring Sing @ Ten Pound Fiddle

MD will be the last-minute stand-in song leader for the Ten Pound Fiddle's 8th Annual Spring Sing in East Lansing, on Friday, March 9 at 8 pm.

Minnesota's Sara Thomsen, an innovative choir director, was originally scheduled as the event's song leader, but had to cancel due to a bout with the flu.

"Mark has been a favorite at the Mid-Winter Singing Festival since the beginning," said Sally Potter, Events Director at the Ten Pound Fiddle. "We of course were delighted that he was available and able to come to East Lansing on short notice. I've spoken with him and he's got a very neat program planned. …
